About the Hotel

The Black Fox 47 St James Parade, Bath, United Kingdom, BA1 1UQ

The Black Fox is a 3.5-star inn located in Bath City Centre, ideally situated 200 meters from The Roman Baths and Bath Abbey. Once a lively pub, it has undergone a significant refurbishment that has heightened its appeal while maintaining a warm atmosphere. The hotel presents a contrast to its five-star neighbor, the Gainsborough Hotel, offering a more straightforward yet charming experience. The surrounding area boasts numerous attractions, including the historic Botanical Gardens at Royal Victoria Park.

Location

Situated in the heart of Bath City Centre, The Black Fox is within a short walking distance of popular sites such as the Circus, Thermae Bath Spa, and the Jane Austen Centre. The property is conveniently located 3.5 km from the University of Bath and just a 10-minute walk from Bath Spa train station. The nearest airport, Bristol Airport, is approximately 30 km away, making travel to and from the hotel manageable.

Rooms

The Black Fox features nine guest rooms, each accessible through a door outside the main pub area. Every room is equipped with amenities such as free WiFi, a flat-screen TV, and a private bathroom with complimentary toiletries. Guests can choose between Double and King rooms, allowing for varied preferences in accommodation. While the rooms are designed for comfort, some may find the external entrance less than ideal.

Eat & Drink

A la carte breakfasts are available, with offerings including the Fox Breakfast, porridge, granola bowls, and pancakes. Local provenance is emphasized in the food and drink provided at the hotel’s restaurant. A buffet breakfast is also offered during weekdays alongside daily vegetarian options. Guests can unwind at the traditional stripped-back bar, known for its range of gins and inviting atmosphere.

Leisure & Business

The Black Fox features both a bar and a restaurant, creating a relaxed setting for socializing. The hotel is smoke-free, ensuring a comfortable environment for all guests. Though primarily leisure-focused, there are desk spaces available in the rooms for those who may need to attend to business matters while away. Additionally, guests can explore the nearby natural beauty of the Cotswolds and Mendip Hills.

The hotel is perfectly located in the heart of the city, making it ideal for exploring Bath. The rooms, though a bit small, are cozy and functional, suitable for a short concert visit to the nearby Bath Forum. While not completely soundproof, the ambiance is lovely, especially during Halloween, even with some extra noise. The service is excellent, with friendly staff and modern, clean rooms. However, a minor drawback was the lack of a smile from one staff member who seemed a bit out of place. The location is superb, right in the bustling city center, close to all the attractions Bath has to offer, with convenient parking nearby. The dining experience, though satisfactory, could use a bit more efficiency during peak times, yet the breakfast was delicious and reasonably priced. Overall, a great value for the money spent.

I had a mixed experience at the hotel. The rooms were really spacious, comfortable, and clean, with nice amenities provided, but lacked ventilation. The service was friendly and helpful, although some disturbances. The location was great for exploring Bath, but the noise level could be bothersome. The dining was decent, with good choices, but room for improvement in portion sizes. Overall, good value for the location and service provided.

The central location, while convenient, can be a bit noisy at times. The dining options were satisfactory, with plenty of other choices nearby. Overall, a great spot to stay for those wanting to explore the historic city.
